Reid to miss Ford funeral

WASHINGTON - Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will miss the state funeral for former President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday night, opting instead to lead a delegation to South America with an expected stop at the Machu Picchu Inca ruins.

Reid, D-Nev., left Wednesday afternoon from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland with a bipartisan group of five other senators, including Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the incoming assistant majority leader, for what has been described as a weeklong visit to Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

The highlight of the trip is said to be separate meetings with the presidents of the three nations, with the last one scheduled in Peru on Tuesday afternoon.

"They would be difficult to cancel," Reid spokesman Jim Manley said via mobile phone as the congressional delegation took off in a U.S. military plane.

The senators are also scheduled to be in Cuzco, Peru, on Sunday, which would give them an opportunity to view the nearby Inca ruins and anything else in advance of New Year's Eve.

Manley said the senators opted to skip Ford-related ceremonies over the next few days because of the long-scheduled meetings with the South American presidents, noting that U.S. relations with some of the countries are in need of improvement.

Manley did not rule out the possibility that the delegation might return to Washington for at least one Ford-related event, perhaps a church service Tuesday morning. But their meeting with Peru's president, scheduled for the afternoon, could interfere with that, he said.

"Senator Reid has tried to reach Mrs. Ford," Manley said, adding that the senator had not received a return call from her before the delegation had departed for South America. Manley later added that Reid had called the former first lady to express condolences, and also to explain why the delegation might not make it back to Washington for the funeral.

Durbin's office released a statement before he left, calling Ford, who died Tuesday at age 93, "a man of principle, integrity and honesty who helped heal the nation during some of our darkest times." He offered his "deepest condolences" to the Ford family.

Other senators making the trip are Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Judd Gregg, R-N.H., Robert Bennett, R-Utah, and Ken Salazar, D-Colo.

Why am I not surprised? Durbin and Reid are 2 first class schlemiels who dont deserve the offices they hold. Regardless of the difficulties in getting meetings scheduled with other Presidents, it would be understood if this entourage stayed behind and did the right thing in helping to honor a man who was our President.

Guaranteed they will be back to dance on Fords grave.

but since Nixon got away with his blatant crimes and every President since Nixon has skated away from office after having committed overt and covert crimes, we have on our hands, here, a situation that I am forced now to call: "Bloody George."

Because Nixon was pardoned this caused a chain effect of lawless Presidents that ultimately led to George Bush taking the war to the terrorists and taking down a tyrant who should of been taken down long before.

President Bush hailed Gerald R. Ford for his administration's honor. His former opponent, President Carter, called him "a man of highest integrity." And Nancy Reagan hailed his dedication to the country.

In the uncertain days after the Watergate scandal, those qualities were enough.
Ford, who died Tuesday at 93, was remembered for getting and keeping the country on course in shaky times.

Carter, who defeated Ford in 1976, said he was "one of the most admirable public servants and human beings I have ever known."

"An outstanding statesman, he wisely chose the path of healing during a deeply divisive time in our nation's history," Carter said. "He frequently rose above politics by emphasizing the need for bipartisanship and seeking common ground on issues critical to our nation. I will always cherish the personal friendship we shared."

Though one of his most significant moves — pardoning President Nixon for any crimes committed in office — was widely derided at the time, many have since come to see it as a gesture that healed the country as much as it hurt Ford's aspirations to be elected president in 1976.

"With his quiet integrity, common sense and kind instincts, President Ford helped heal our land and restore public confidence in the presidency," President Bush said in a statement. "The American people will always admire Gerald Ford's devotion to duty, his personal character and the honorable conduct of his administration."

Former first lady Nancy Reagan, whose late husband mounted an intraparty challenge to Ford in 1976, praised Ford for his service to the nation during and after his time in office.

"His accomplishments and devotion to our country are vast, and even long after he left the presidency he made it a point to speak out on issues important to us all," she said.

Ford died at his home in Rancho Mirage, about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, where he retired.

"He accepted the enormous responsibilities of the Presidency during a dark hour in our history, fully knowing the daunting challenge he faced," Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger said. "No man could have been better suited to the task of healing our nation and restoring faith in our government."

Alexander Haig, Ford's former chief-of-staff, said on CNN that Ford "had to bring our country back and make it whole again and he did it with dignity, he did it with great, great skill and sensitivity."

Good news indeed

In 30 days or less, justice will be served for the millions killed under the brutal dictatorship of Sadaam Hussein. I pray for his soul that it may be saved prior to execution and he will be welcomed into the kingdom of God. But if he refuses to repent and accept Christ as his savior, then forever he may be condemned.

Iraq's highest appeals court on Tuesday upheld

Saddam Hussein's death sentence and said he must be hanged within 30 days for the killing of 148 Shiites in the central city of Dujail.

The sentence "must be implemented within 30 days," chief judge Aref Shahin said. "From tomorrow, any day could be the day of implementation."

On Nov. 5, an Iraqi court sentenced Saddam to the gallows for ordering the 1982 killings following an attempt on his life.

Under Iraqi law, the appeals court decision must be ratified by President Jalal Talabani and Iraq's two vice presidents. Talabani opposes the death penalty but has in the past deputized a vice president to sign an execution order on his behalf — a substitute that was legally accepted.

Raed Juhi, a spokesman for the High Tribunal court that convicted Saddam, said the judicial system would ensure that Saddam is executed even if Talabani and the two vice presidents do not ratify the decision.

"We'll implement the verdict by the power of the law," Juhi said. He did not elaborate.

The appeals court also upheld death sentences for Barzan Ibrahim, Saddam's half brother and intelligence chief during the Dujail killings, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of Iraq's Revolutionary Court, which issued the death sentences against the Dujail residents.

The appeals court concluded the sentence of life imprisonment given to former vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was too lenient and returned his file to the High Tribunal. Ramadan was convicted of premeditated murder in the Dujail case.

"We demand that he be sentenced to death," said Shahin, the appeals judge.

At his trial, Saddam argued that the Dujail residents who were killed had been convicted in a legitimate Iraqi court for trying to assassinate him in 1982.

The televised trial was watched throughout Iraq and the Middle East as much for theater as for substance. Saddam was ejected from the courtroom repeatedly for political harangues, and his half brother once showed up in long underwear and sat with his back to the judges.

The nine-month trial inflamed Iraq's political divide, however, and three defense lawyers and a witness were murdered during the course of its 39 sessions.

Saddam is in the midst of a second trial charging him with genocide and other crimes during a 1987-88 military crackdown on Kurds in northern Iraq. An estimated 180,000 Kurds died during the operation.

Saddam was found hiding with an unfired pistol in a hole in the ground near his home village north of Baghdad in December 2003, eight months after he fled the capital ahead of advancing American troops.

I grew up listening to James Brown, his music has many fond and happy memories for me.

ATLANTA - James Brown, the dynamic, pompadoured "Godfather of Soul," whose rasping vocals and revolutionary rhythms made him a founder of rap, funk and disco as well, died early Monday, his agent said. He was 73.

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music. Longtime friend Charles Bobbit was by his side, he said.

Copsidas said the cause of death was uncertain. "We really don't know at this point what he died of," he said

Pete Allman, a radio personality in Las Vegas who had been friends with Brown for 15 years, credited Brown with jump-starting his career and motivating him personally and professionally.

"He was a very positive person. There was no question he was the hardest working man in show business," Allman said. "I remember Mr. Brown as someone who always motivated me, got me reading the Bible."

Along with Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and a handful of others, Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. At least one generation idolized him, and sometimes openly copied him. His rapid-footed dancing inspired Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson among others. Songs such as David Bowie's "Fame," Prince's "Kiss," George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song" were clearly based on Brown's rhythms and vocal style.

If Brown's claim to the invention of soul can be challenged by fans of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, then his rights to the genres of rap, disco and funk are beyond question. He was to rhythm and dance music what Dylan was to lyrics: the unchallenged popular innovator.

"James presented obviously the best grooves," rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy once told The Associated Press. "To this day, there has been no one near as funky. No one's coming even close."His hit singles include such classics as "Out of Sight," "(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Say It Out Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

"I clearly remember we were calling ourselves colored, and after the song, we were calling ourselves black," Brown said in a 2003 Associated Press interview. "The song showed even people to that day that lyrics and music and a song can change society.

"He won a Grammy award for lifetime achievement in 1992, as well as Grammys in 1965 for "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" (best R&B recording) and for "Living In America" in 1987 (best R&B vocal performance, male.) He was one of the initial artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, along with Presley, Chuck Berry and other founding fathers.

He triumphed despite an often unhappy personal life. Brown, who lived in Beech Island near the Georgia line, spent more than two years in a South Carolina prison for aggravated assault and failing to stop for a police officer. After his release on in 1991, Brown said he wanted to "try to straighten out" rock music.

From the 1950s, when Brown had his first R&B hit, "Please, Please, Please" in 1956, through the mid-1970s, Brown went on a frenzy of cross-country tours, concerts and new songs. He earned the nickname "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business."

With his tight pants, shimmering feet, eye makeup and outrageous hair, Brown set the stage for younger stars such as Michael Jackson and Prince.

In 1986, he was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And rap stars of recent years overwhelmingly have borrowed his lyrics with a digital technique called sampling.

Brown's work has been replayed by the Fat Boys, Ice-T, Public Enemy and a host of other rappers. "The music out there is only as good as my last record," Brown joked in a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

"Disco is James Brown, hip-hop is James Brown, rap is James Brown; you know what I'm saying? You hear all the rappers, 90 percent of their music is me," he told the AP in 2003.

Born in poverty in Barnwell, S.C., in 1933, he was abandoned as a 4-year-old to the care of relatives and friends and grew up on the streets of Augusta, Ga., in an "ill-repute area," as he once called it. There he learned to wheel and deal.

"I wanted to be somebody," Brown said.

By the eighth grade in 1949, Brown had served 3 1/2 years in Alto Reform School near Toccoa, Ga., for breaking into cars.

While there, he met Bobby Byrd, whose family took Brown into their home. Byrd also took Brown into his group, the Gospel Starlighters. Soon they changed their name to the Famous Flames and their style to hard R&B.

In January 1956, King Records of Cincinnati signed the group, and four months later "Please, Please, Please" was in the R&B Top Ten.

While most of Brown's life was glitz and glitter, he was plagued with charges of abusing drugs and alcohol and of hitting his third wife, Adrienne.

In September 1988, Brown, high on PCP and carrying a shotgun, entered an insurance seminar next to his Augusta office. Police said he asked seminar participants if they were using his private restroom.

Police chased Brown for a half-hour from Augusta into South Carolina and back to Georgia. The chase ended when police shot out the tires of his truck.

Brown received a six-year prison sentence. He spent 15 months in a South Carolina prison and 10 months in a work release program before being paroled in February 1991. In 2003, the South Carolina parole board granted him a pardon for his crimes in that state.

Soon after his release, Brown was on stage again with an audience that included millions of cable television viewers nationwide who watched the three-hour, pay-per-view concert at Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles.

Adrienne Brown died in 1996 in Los Angeles at age 47. She took PCP and several prescription drugs while she had a bad heart and was weak from cosmetic surgery two days earlier, the coroner said.

More recently, he married his fourth wife, Tomi Raye Hynie, one of his backup singers. The couple had a son, James Jr.

Two years later, Brown spent a week in a private Columbia hospital, recovering from what his agent said was dependency on painkillers. Brown's attorney, Albert "Buddy" Dallas, said singer was exhausted from six years of road shows.

Pelosi is not ruling out a win by Democrat in disputed race

Despite warnings that it could turn the new Congress into a partisan battleground, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refuses to rule out the possibility that Democrat Christine Jennings could be seated to represent the 13th District when the 110th Congress convenes in 12 days.

Republicans and even some Democrats said they expect the seat to go to Republican Vern Buchanan, the certified winner by 369 votes.

But Pelosi, who will head a 31-seat Democrat majority in the House, has refused to shut the door on Jennings, until audits, lawsuits and a House investigation are completed.

"The bottom line here is that nothing’s off the table," said Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill.Buchanan, who claims the election was cleanly decided and criticizes Jennings for contesting the result, will be in Washington, D.C., next month, ready to assume the duties, aides say.

"Historical precedent is that when there’s a contested race the certified winner be seated," said Buchanan spokeswoman Sally Tibbetts. "Therefore, we fully expect Vern Buchanan to be seated on Jan. 4."

But Pelosi’s spokesman said calls for seating the certified victor represent a Republican interpretation, not an iron-clad rule.

In 1984, for example, a Democrat-controlled House refused to seat Republican Richard McIntyre, the certified winner by 418 votes after a state-ordered recount.The statement from Pelosi’s office comes two weeks after national Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said that Buchanan should "absolutely not" be seated on Jan. 4.

It is unclear, however, whether other Democrats — assuming control of the House for the first time in more than a decade — are ready for the battle that would ensue if Buchanan is denied the seat without a court ruling or other legal mandate.

"At most, he should be seated provisionally," said Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Pembroke Pines and one of Jennings’ closest allies. "In my mind, I can’t really justify leaving the constituents of the 13th District without representation during the House Administration and the court’s review."

So far, neither a state audit of the iVotronic touch-screen voting machines nor lawsuits by Jennings and voting groups have produced evidence to suggest Election Day malfunction.

This week, the contested election entered the political realm when Jennings took her challenge to Congress, filing a contest with the House Administration Committee seeking an investigation and, possibly, a new election.

Such challenges can take months or longer to resolve.

If Buchanan takes the seat on Jan. 4, history bodes well for his keeping it. Only two of the 105 contests filed since 1933 have resulted in an unseating, the last time in 1967, according to a committee report.

Unlike the audit and lawsuit, the outcome of Jennings’ U.S. House challenge could hinge on partisan politics.

In a prescient exchange five weeks before the Nov. 7 election, Democratic and Republican House leaders acknowledged gray areas in the law and politics of election challenges, foreshadowing the complicated and bruising path that could await Jennings.

On Sept. 28, Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., wrote the Republican chairman of the House Administration Committee, Rep. Vernon Ehlers of Michigan, noting that he was "deeply concerned" about "ambiguities and deficiencies" of the election contest laws.

Hoyer, the incoming House majority leader, called the law "so ambiguous that it can actually exacerbate an inherently partisan process rather than tame it."

Two weeks after the letter, both sides met to discuss the questions Hoyer raised. Another letter followed from Ehlers on Nov. 3, agreeing that changes ought to be made and outlining a proposal. The exchange died there. On Wednesday, a spokeswoman for Hoyer called Ehlers’ letter and proposal a "non-response."

"We’re basically left with the law that covers these types of issues," said Hoyer spokeswoman Stacey Bernards.

Hoyer’s letter raises specific doubts about the committee’s power to subpoena evidence, which could be tested if Jennings’ attorneys fail to convince a state judge that the voting machine manufacturer should turn over the source code to the machine software.

Election Systems & Software Inc. has refused to do so, calling it a trade secret. Jennings’ experts hope to examine the code for flaws that might have contributed to the nearly 18,000 undervotes in the race.

Before the 1996 election contest, the committee’s subpoena power under the Federal Contested Election Act had gone untested, Hoyer wrote Ehlers. Some subpoenas in that case went unanswered for nearly a year.

"When the process was tested, it was found profoundly wanting," Hoyer wrote. "Neither the courts nor the committee has the power to enforce the subpoenas."

Karl Sandstrom, elections counsel to the committee from 1979 to 1992, described the House elections contest process as one replete with "mythmaking," "partisan power plays" and "dueling press conferences."

"The House’s procedures are not as spelled out as in a judicial contest," he said of contests brought under the Federal Contested Election Act. "People can easily start believing their own political spin, and the facts can easily be spun."

Hoyer’s letter echoes those concerns, ending on a dour note. "With the direction of the House likely to turn on a handful of seats, ensuring that contested elections are adjudicated in a fair, transparent, and swift manner is essential," Hoyer wrote. "If the last contested House election is any guide, FCEA many not be up to the challenge."

Once again this is a story that we will only read about in the local papers. Not in our mainstream media. Because it puts the lie to the Democrats’ talk of ending corruption and partisanship.

Of course the Democrats are just doing what they always do. Winning power by any means possible — fair or foul. Even if it means stealing an election outright.

Sadly, the Republicans will probably do what they always do — concede rather than put up a fight.

It’s all in a day’s work for Pelosi’s "most ethical Congress ever."

And then there are just Americans.

You Call me "White boy," "Cracker," "Honkey," "Whitey," "Caveman" . and that's OK.

But when I call you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger, camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink you call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you, so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day. You have
Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi. You have the NAACP. You have BET.

If we had WET (White Entertainment Television) we'd be racists.

If we had a White Pride Day . you would call us racists.

If we had White History Month . we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to "advance" OUR lives we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce.

Wonder who pays for that?

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships ... you know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US, yet if there were "White colleges" THAT would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights. If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride you call us racists.

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society you call him a racist.

I am proud.

But, you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists?

PHOENIX — The state's controversial 9/11 Memorial is going to remain as is for at least another two months.

A meeting of the Governmental Mall Commission called for Wednesday to discuss removing the parts some find offensive was postponed when not enough members of the panel showed up. That left Chairman Tom Smith, a vocal critic of the monument, unable to do anything more than complain.

The delay gives the separate 9/11 Commission, which approved the original design, more time to decide whether changes are appropriate.

At a meeting last week there were some suggestions to alter some of the 54 phrases cut into the ring-shaped steel memorial across from the state Capitol commemorating the events surrounding the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Even Billy Shields, who chairs that panel, said language about an erroneous bombing of an Afghan village by U.S. forces may need to be removed because of questions about its accuracy.

And Shields said there may also need to be some sort of explanatory kiosk set up to put the display in context: While the memorial makes mention of planes flying into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, there is no mention that the planes were hijacked in the first place by terrorists.

But Shields, in a memo to Smith, said the 9/11 Commission won't meet again until February. Shields said it is then up to Smith's panel to review the proposed changes.

"Assuming the two commissions could then agree, we could go forward to raise the money necessary to complete the changes," Shields wrote.

Smith, however, doesn't believe his commission has to agree with the other panel at all. In fact, he said the Governmental Mall Commission can order the changes, regardless of whether the 9/11 Commission likes it or not.

"We have the authority to approve everything that goes in the Capitol mall area," he said.

A move in that direction, though, might provoke a court battle.

The 9/11 Commission raised the funds privately for construction with plans to deed it over to the state. But Bill Bell, director of the state Department of Administration, which controls all state property, has yet to formally accept the deed.

Smith said that is legally irrelevant. He said the fact the monument is on the mall makes both its presence — and its content — subject to review and alteration by his commission.

And Smith said even if that's not the case, the 9/11 Commission risks a far greater threat if it does not remove offensive phrases: The Legislature could approve a law mandating the changes.

Critics have said the changes must go beyond the statement about the Afghan village.
"Nothing there says this is a memorial to those who died by terrorists on 9/11," said Sen. Jake Flake, R-Snowflake, who also is a member of the Governmental Mall Commission.

"Some of the statements on there are anti-American," he said. Among the more controversial statements are a quote that "You don't win battles of terrorism with more battles" and a statement "Middle East violence motivates attacks in U.S.," which some have interpreted as suggesting American foreign policy precipitated the events of 9/11.

This committee should realize it has undertaken a task that is flawed in its foundation. You'll not have to look far to find people who think the US brought 9/11 on itself (the UN, or any humanities faculty would be a good start.) When one invites commentary and sets up no parameters, one gets all manner of "opinion" and then reaps the whirlwind as now we see.

A tribute to the victims of 9/11 is a noble concept. Adhereing to that concept would have avoided all this.

It's with great sadness that I feel compelled to make this statement in response to the accusations and attacks made against the Arizona 9/11 Memorial in recent months. My only brother, Bob, was on American Flight #77 which crashed into the Pentagon. Words cannot come close to expressing the hurt I've felt these past five years. On Sept 11 of this year the Arizona Memorial for 9/11 was unveiled. At 6:oo AM that morning I attended a dedication ceremony within the memorial. There were religious leaders from all different denominations; a rabbi, a priest, a minister, a monk, a Muslim, a Native American and others all giving their blessings to the memorial and to the families who lost love one's that day. As the ceremony progressed I was moved by the retired fire fighters from New Your City, the police choir and the students from Shadow Mt. High School who sang with deep passion and the busload of students and teachers who came from my high school and greeted me with tears in their eyes. Sitting with my wife and family I felt as if I were being hugged by the state of Arizona. It was a feeling of strength and comfort I hadn't felt in five years.

During the past few months certain individuals have found it necessary to attack this memorial, claiming it doesn't represent America and is no more than a liberal political statement. They have even gone so far as to suggest they'd like to start a movement to rip it down. Let me go on record as saying that as a direct victim of the 9/11 attacks they don't speak for me. While some of the phrases displayed in the monument taken in isolation may convey different opinions and viewpoints it was never the intention of the committee to offend anyone. Personally I find the memorial healing. It's a true work of art capturing the Arizona experience in the magic of sunlight. Standing at the memorial this Sept 11 I truly felt that America is the greatest country in the world because of our ability to honor and respect diversity of opinions. This monument makes me proud to be an Arizonan and proud to be American. It's my deepest hope that as we reflect upon this monument and the events of 9/11 we can grow together, not apart.

During the planning and construction of this memorial the committee faced many challenging questions---How do we make the Arizona 9/11 experience live forever? How do we embrace the varied experiences faced throughout our state? Is this monument just for the victims who died that day? Should it be a reflection of the piece of everyone's heart and mind that was taken that day? How will future generations view 9/11? For the past three years these thoughts became the nucleus for discussions and meetings. As we moved forward with our decisions the spirit that drove us was consensus. Nothing was ever done in private. All meetings were announced and open to the public. No one's feelings were ever denied or not listened to.

I am extremely proud to have been a part of the 9/11 memorial committee and am continually awe struck by the monument we created. It was never our intention to create a headstone for those who died. We have left that task for the communities living in NY, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. Rather we have produced a work of art that embraces the Arizona experience by illuminating events and inspiring conversation. Perhaps the fact that we are still meeting and talking about its substance today is a testimony to its success. The phrases included in the monument represent both historical and emotional pieces of history. They were chosen from the research done by the graduate school at Arizona State University. While individual statements may not represent everyone's opinion they do represent the cross section of views that is Arizona.

In closing, we should not forget the piece of the World Trade Center given to Arizona Firefighters that's housed at our memorial. Nor should we forget the piece of the Pentagon that I personally carried back from the wreckage in Washington and mixed together with earth from Shankfield, Pennsylvania, to form the base of the plaque upon which the memorial poem is written. Look around and realize that very few states have achieved what we have in the construction of this memorial. It is my hope that Arizonans can continue to lead by coming together, talking and respecting different ideas. That's the America that I want to live in and that's the America that I believe we have here in Arizona.

I was feeling good about the possibility of the memorial being changed/corrected. I don't now. This email shows that the commission is only going through the motions. They never entered that building on Friday Dec 15 with an open mind, it was already made up.

Between this and other things.....I wonder why I ever gave up drinking.

'Silent Night': Carolers Told to Stop

A high school choir was asked to stop singing Christmas carols during an ice skating show featuring Olympic medalist Sasha Cohen out of concern the skater would be offended because she's Jewish.

A city staff member, accompanied by a police officer, approached the Rubidoux High School Madrigals at the Riverside Outdoor Ice Skating Rink just as they launched into "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" and requested that the troupe stop singing, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.

Cohen, the 2006 Olympic silver medalist and 2006 U.S. National Champion, had just finished her performance at the rink on the downtown pedestrian mall, and was signing autographs.

Choir director Staci Della-Rocco said she complied with the request "because a policeman told me to stop. I didn't want to have a big old huge scene in front of my kids," according to the newspaper.

The city staff member, special-events employee Michelle Baldwin, could not be reached for comment. City Development Director Belinda J. Graham confirmed the incident.

"This request was simply made by a staff member who was attempting to be sensitive to the celebrity guest, without considering the wider implications ... or consulting with her supervisor for guidance," Graham said in an e-mail to the newspaper.

Mayor Ron Loveridge called the incident "unfortunate."

"You kind of wish people do a little checking first. You certainly have my apology," he said, referring to the choir members.

A spokeswoman with the New York-based PR firm that helped promote the event said Cohen did not make the request to silence the singers.

To hear the students tell it, Stephen Murmer is a fun, popular art teacher who is always quick to crack a joke. But there is another side to Murmer. A side that has agitated school officials and resulted in his suspension. A side that focuses, almost entirely, on the crack in his backside.

Outside of class and under an alter ego, the self-proclaimed "butt-printing artist" creates floral and abstract art by plastering his posterior and genitals with paint and pressing them against canvas. His cheeky creations sell for hundreds of dollars.

This has not gone over well with Chesterfield County school officials, who placed Murmer on administrative leave from his job at Monacan High School.

Murmer contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia after he was suspended on Friday, ACLU legal director Rebecca Glenberg said. He told Glenberg that administrators had suspended him with pay for five days because of his work as a butt-print painter and that he also could face unpaid suspension pending an investigation.

Murmer has been instructed by the school administration not to speak with the media, Glenberg said. He did not return messages seeking comment Tuesday.

Chesterfield County schools spokeswoman Debra Marlow confirmed that a Monacan art teacher had been placed on administrative leave but declined to provide additional details because it is a personnel issue.

"In the school system, personnel regulations state that teachers are expected to set an example for students through their personal conduct," Marlow said. "Additionally, the Supreme Court has stated that schools must teach by example and that teachers, like parents, are role models."

Murmer went to great lengths to keep his work life separate from his activities as an artist, said ACLU executive director Kent Willis. As a butt-printing artist, he goes by the name "Stan Murmur," and appears in disguise in photographs and videos promoting his art.

"As a public employee, he has constitutional rights, and he certainly has the right to engage in private legal activities protected by the First Amendment of the Constitution," Willis said.

A nearly naked Murmer expressed concern about remaining incognito during a 2003 appearance on the now-canceled cable television talk show, "Unscrewed With Martin Sargent." In a clip from the show, available on YouTube.com, Murmer dons a fake nose and glasses, a towel on his head, a black thong — and nothing else.

"I'm certainly proud of the ass painting," Murmer said in response to questions about his disguise. "I do have a real job where I do have real clients and I don't think they'd be too understanding if I was also the guy who painted with my ass."

That video has made the rounds at Monacan High, where the mere mention of Murmer's name was enough to elicit grins from students Tuesday. Most appeared to be firmly behind their teacher, describing his suspension as "stupid,""ignorant" and "kinda retarded."

"Everyone has been talking about it," senior Heather Thompson said with a laugh as she and other students streamed out of school.

Thompson, who worked with Murmer in the school's art club, said many students have known about his paintings for a few years, but the YouTube clip recently got everyone buzzing. She and other students described Murmer as a funny, likable and popular teacher. There is little support among the student body for his suspension, she said.

"It was simply him expressing himself and his art, and it had nothing to do with school — he wasn't advertising," she said.

This is not the first time Murmer has faced potential problems because of his extracurricular activities. Three years ago, he contacted the ACLU after he was told school administrators were unhappy about his paintings, Willis said. The issue eventually blew over with no suspension issued, Willis said. It was unclear why administrators decided to take action now.

Owning a piece of Murmer's art doesn't come cheap. On his Web site, his creations run upward of $900. His most popular piece, "Tulip Butts," goes for $600.

So how does one become a butt-printing artist? On his Web site, Murmur said his journey began a few years ago when he was told to find an organic item to use as a stamp for a class painting assignment. He decided to use his posterior. His final product was a hit with the class and a butt painter was born.

He was, however, the only student not asked to hold up his organic stamp.

Boy Calls 911 49 Times From Texas School

Police in this Austin suburb were stumped for hours by the 49 emergency calls that kept coming in from an unregistered cell phone. The caller would say nothing before hanging up, sometimes after a brief giggle. Eventually, though, police found their man, er child: a 7-year-old calling from his elementary school classroom just for kicks.

"He was just doing it for fun because he had a cell phone," said Eric Poteet, spokesman for the Round Rock police "The only number that would work was 911."

The phone had been deactivated. Because the phone had no account attached to it during the Nov. 14 calling spree, dispatchers couldn't pinpoint where the calls came from. Instead, they used cell phone relay towers to define an approximate area, Poteet said.

During one of the calls, dispatchers heard classroom chatter in the background and decided to check out the elementary school. Once they found the boy, the officers confiscated the phone and called his parents, Poteet said.

Although making silent or abusive calls to 911 is a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, the boy was not charged because of his age, Poteet said.

Changes are probably coming to Arizona's contentious 9/11 Memorial.

But what degree of revision, by whom and when are questions that remain unanswered after a five-hour public hearing Friday to discuss the memorial.

Arizona's 9/11 Memorial Commission called the hearing, its first since the memorial came under fire soon after being dedicated on Sept. 11 - the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. On hand were roughly 100 residents who crammed into the basement of a state building near the Capitol, just a block from the memorial itself.

After more than two hours of testimony that was often emotional but generally respectful, commission members said they needed more time to review and consider information relating to the memorial and could issue a recommendation next month.

Commission Chairman Billy Shields called it "highly likely" that the concrete-and-steel memorial will be altered. The commission has vowed to reconsider some of the 54 inscriptions cut into its disc-like face, some of which critics have described as anti-American, partisan or simply irrelevant.

"I think we need a fitting monument that honors people without controversy, without partisanship," said Mike McAvoy, who was in Manhattan when the attacks occurred and lost a brother when the World Trade Center towers collapsed.

While the memorial may be changed, it's also possible it could be left as is, with a kiosk and informational pamphlets created to add context and better explain the memorial to visitors.

"If there is any inaccuracy or significant level of mistrust that results from this memorial, the commission should really take a look at that," said Donna Killoughey Bird, a commission member and widow of the only Arizona victim of the 9/11 attacks, Gary Bird.

Of particular interest is a statement etched into the memorial - "Erroneous U.S. air strike kills 46 Uruzgan civilians" - that commission members heard evidence may be inaccurate. Initial media reports indicated that an Afghani wedding party had been hit. But Robin Stoddard, now a member of the Air Force reserves, told commission members that he had been part of a 2002 military investigation that found that the pilots had acted appropriately after coming under enemy fire.

"If they're shooting at us," Stoddard said, "we get to shoot back."

While Stoddard asked that the airstrike inscription be removed, other members of the public warned against reopening the process to make changes. Not everyone will agree with every inscription, supporters argued, but the memorial in whole represents the mixed feelings of Arizonans relating to the terrorist attacks and the events that followed.

"This memorial is truly about humanity, not politics," said Matthew Salenger, a member of the memorial design team.

If nothing else, it has been a strange start for the memorial, which has been alternately assailed and praised in public rallies, was thrust into the recent race for governor and became the focus of national attention.

Conspicuous in his absence Friday was Len Munsil, the Republican candidate for governor who termed the memorial "anti-American" during his campaign and pledged to tear it down if elected. Munsil made opposition to the memorial one of the cornerstones of his criticism of Gov. Janet Napolitano, a Democrat who initially praised the memorial and has remained supportive.

John Teefy, a Phoenix Fire Department captain, said he doesn't agree with everything written on the memorial, but he blasted Munsil and others for using the issue as a campaign ploy.

"Quite simply, this is political," Teefy said. "This has been stirred up by the right wing of my party by people who've never done a thing to help a firefighter or cop."

What happens to the memorial from here is unclear.

The state Department of Administration says it has not yet signed for control of the memorial, which could mean it remains in the hands of the 9/11 Commission. But the Legislative Governmental Mall Commission has oversight of the 9/11 Memorial and all others at Wesley Bolin Plaza.

The commission chairman, former state Sen. Tom Smith, testified Friday that he would like to heavily alter the memorial by removing some inscriptions and adding others to seven of its panels. And Shields said he expects the Legislature to wade into the issue when the session begins in early January.

There are a few things I find interesting about this article....so let me break it down.

Since I have never been there, I can not speak authoritavely on this statement..but suffice it to say, I get the picture of a small room in the basement of the Capitol building which had been chosen purposely to limit the number of people who testified. I look forward to hearing about how many were kept out due to no room.

While the memorial may be changed, it's also possible it could be left as is, with a kiosk and informational pamphlets created to add context and better explain the memorial to visitors.

I have no idea where this comes from, but its a stupid idea..why create something that is going to take more resources to keep it going? Who will be responsible for refilling the pamphlet display? What are you going to do about having that much paper in the memorial plaza? Its likely that the pamphlets will be dropped or improperly thrown away...and its something that has to be maintained forever. No..not a good idea at all

Apparently this guy missed the point of Fridays meeting, the fact that so many people showed up that the commission is actually considering changes shows this was never a political issue, and Munsil stepped in to help put media attention on it...that is what this guy hates..the fact that the hidden agenda of the commission was revealed to the public.

I was reviewing my hits on this blog since October 25...surpassed 2000...but thats not what is interesting...what is interesting is that I have had hits from every state except 3 in the North...does anyone have internet up there? :)



Hell...I have even had at least 1 hit from all the provinces in Canada :)

So, here is a little tidbit that did not get a lot of MSM play. Your rights are slowly being eroded folks. First it was a smoking ban, because the do-gooders believe that they know what is best for your health instead of letting you make personal choices, then it was more taxes on cigarettes...now, we have New York officially banning trans-fats, telling mom and pop what to do and how to do it, instead of letting the free-market make the choice, such as what KFC did.

NYC Bans Trans Fats From Eateries

NEW YORK Dec 5, 2006 (AP)— New York on Tuesday became the first city in the nation to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants, leading the charge to limit consumption of an ingredient linked to heart disease and used in everything from french fries to pizza dough to pancake mix.

In a city where eating out is a major form of activity either for fun or out of hectic necessity many New Yorkers were all for the ban, saying health concerns were more important than fears of Big Brother supervising their stomachs.

"I don't care about what might be politically correct and what's not," said Murray Bader, nursing a cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts on Tuesday morning. "I want to live longer!"

The 72-year-old Manhattan resident called the ban a "wake-up call" for a public often unaware of the risks of artificial fats. "This stuff clogs up your vessels," he said. "When it comes to health, we only have one life."

Toni Lewis, catching a quick dinner at McDonald's before her daughter's piano lesson on the eve of the vote, acknowledged that yes, it might be an intrusion for the city to tell people what they can and can't put into their stomachs. But, she added, it was a welcome one.

"This is New York," she said. "People eat out a lot. We don't have a choice. We need someone to make it a healthier proposition."

Health and nutrition groups say artificial trans fats clearly contribute to heart disease. Studies have shown they raise bad cholesterol and lower the good kind. Partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, the main form of artificial trans fats, is used for frying and baking and turns up in a host of processed foods: cookies, pizza dough, crackers and pre-made blends like pancake mix.

"It's basically a slow form of poison," said David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center. "I applaud New York City, and frankly, I think there should be a nationwide ban."

Not everyone agrees with Katz he's gotten angry e-mails calling him and colleagues the "food police" and saying, "If I want to eat trans fats, that's my inalienable right." To which he responds: "Would you want the burden of asking your restaurant whether there's lead in the food? Whether there's arsenic in the bread? For all I know, maybe arsenic makes bread more crusty. But it's poison."

Some industry representatives were not happy. E. Charles Hunt, executive vice president of the New York State Restaurant Association, said the city had overstepped its authority by ordering restaurants to abandon an ingredient permitted by the FDA.

"This is a legal product," he said. "They're headed down a slippery slope here."

The Board of Health, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a minor break by relaxing the proposed deadline. Restaurants will now be barred from using most frying oils containing the fats by July 2007 and will have another year to eliminate them from all foods.

The ban, which was advocated by health-conscious Mayor Michael Bloomberg, follows a national requirement beginning this past January that companies list artificial trans-fat content on food labels. Efforts are also being made to reduce the trans-fat content of snacks in school vending machines.

The New York ban does not affect grocery stores. Nor does it apply to naturally occurring trans fats, which are found in some meats and dairy.

It's the danger a bad diet poses to children that has experts the most worried. It's also what worries Kathy Ramirez, a 26-year-old New York mother who takes her toddler to McDonald's every week. She approves of the ban and a related measure passed Tuesday, requiring restaurants that already disclose calorie counts mostly chain restaurants to post them right on the menu.

"It's hurting us, all this fat, but the kids really like it," said Ramirez, pointing to 3-year-old Amber, who'd just finished her dinner. "It would be better to know what we're getting."

(McDonald's Corp. has been experimenting with healthier oil blends but has not committed to a full switch yet, though it has said it will be ready for a New York City ban. Wendy's International Inc. introduced a zero-trans fat oil in August, and Yum Brands Inc.'s KFC and Taco Bell said they also will cut trans fats from their kitchens.)

At Le Perigord, a tony, sedate French restaurant favored by diplomats from the nearby United Nations, owner Georges Briguet is a big fan of the trans-fats ban, and even says he'd consider putting calorie counts on his own upscale menu though it's only chains with standardized items that would be affected.

"In this country there are so many obese people it really is a disgrace," Briguet said. "It's important for the health of the population to ban these artificial fats. When I was growing up in France, my mother never even gave me a french fry. We don't have a fryer here. We just saute our potatoes in some good butter."

The mayor, Briguet added, "is just as responsible for the health of someone eating the wrong food as for someone who kills himself smoking." Bloomberg banned smoking in New York's bars and restaurants during his first term.

The public acceptance of that smoking ban, which at the time was a major source of worry to restaurant owners, shows why food chains should embrace the current New York ban, said Tim Zagat, founder of the popular Zagat Survey.

"You can't put lead in your food, right? With trans fats, you're not going to die as fast, but they are clearly bad for you and people don't even know when they're eating them," Zagat said.

"If I were a restaurant, I would comply as quickly as I possibly could," he said. "Some fast-food chains are in the middle of the railroad track right now. They'd better rethink their business models. This is the next big issue in the United States."

Ok..let me preface this by saying this is EXACTLY the type of thing that I am striving to make sure doesnt happen. This incident PISSES ME OFF to no end and I am so angry right now I am shaking. This woman should be strung up as an example. Apologies to the woman who read my blog, but seriously, I would have beat the living piss out of her had I witnessed this.

Jason Jones, 21, told police a woman he did not know walked up to him near the United Airlines ticket counter, asked him if he was a Fort Drum solider and, when he responded that he was, spat in his face.

Police searched the airport garage and located a woman fitting the description that Jones provided, who was later identified as Maggi. Police escorted her into the terminal, where Jones identified her as the woman who had spit on him. A second soldier on the scene supported Jones' accusation, police said.

Maggi offered no explanation for her conduct, police said. She could not be reached for comment Thursday night

Three Ann Arbor residents accused of disrupting a lecture on the Middle East were arrested at the Michigan League Thursday evening, campus police said.

Raymond Tanter, a professor emeritus at U-M and current faculty member at Georgetown University, was scheduled to give a lecture called, "Stalled international diplomacy and problematic U.S. military options for Iran.'' The event was organized by a student group, the American Movement for Israel.

Protesters stood outside the league entrance before the lecture and were asked to move, said Diane Brown, a U-M spokeswoman.
Inside the building, Brown said organizers repeatedly warned a heckler over the course of an hour as Tanter gave his talk. Finally, organizers asked police to remove the most vocal and abusive protester, a 47-year-old woman, Brown said. The woman was arrested after she refused to leave.

Police said several other people interfered with officers arresting the woman, and two of them were arrested. The names of the people arrested were not released, but the other two were a 49-year-old man and a 60-year-old man, Brown said.

"On our campus, freedom of expression is an extremely valued ideal and issue,'' Brown said. "We certainly encourage even vigorous dialogue but we also recognize the rights of scheduled activities to occur, so that is why we have the freedom of speech and artistic expression policy and guidelines.''

Police plan to seek several charges against the three protesters, Brown said.

Henry Herskovitz, a frequent protester of Israeli policies in the Middle East, told The News that he was one of the people arrested. He called Tanter a "warhawk'' and said Tanter implied that Iran should be attacked - a claim Tanter denies.

Herskovitz said he jumped onto the woman who was being arrested because she was being roughed up by police officers. He said an officer pulled him off, and he jumped onto her again.

"They were just hurting her for the sake of hurting her,'' he said. "There were enough cops there, they could have just picked her up and carried her out.''
Brown said the woman used "passive resistance.''

"The officers used an appropriate level of controlled technique to affect the arrest, and to keep her and others nearby and themselves safe,'' Brown said.

Tanter, who teaches a course at Georgetown on terrorism and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, said he had to abandon the power point presentation and "wing it'' because of the protesters. He said he opposes using military force in Iran, but believes the United States needs to keep military options on the table to reinforce diplomatic solutions.

"I had an academic presentation, which I was not allowed to make because of the protesters,'' he said.

Tanter is the author of "Classifying evil: Bush administration rhetoric and policy toward rogue regimes,'' and "Rogue regimes: Terrorism and proliferation.'' He also served on the senior staff of the National Security Council during the Reagan administration.

Josh Berman, a senior and chairman of the student group, said protesters tried to "hijack'' the event. Berman said Tanter took questions from some of the protesters and gave them an opportunity to speak, but some of the protesters insulted him.

"They were trying to hijack the debate to reflect what they wanted to get across,'' Berman said. "They didn't want to listen and they did not want to talk.''

U-M policies say the university recognizes dissent but also recognizes the right of speakers to be heard. If a person continues to be disruptive after repeated warnings, he or she can be ejected from an event.
