Sickness

For those of you who say drug addiction is an illness, not a crime, what do you think of those who sell the drugs? Is it ok to sell to kids? The latest news on Meth- Channel 4 news out of Tucson has the latest this morning on flavored Meth. That's right, makers of this instantly addictive drug are flavoring it with strawberry and grape flavors and wrapping it as candy to distribute to kids.

True, but in my little town of Bisbee, AZ, there are people here who believe pot should be legal. Ok, so if that becomes legal, what's next? We have a huge METH problem here and every time a user is interviewed by the paper, they all say they started with pot. Hmmmmm....

airborne vet,

Drugs being legal or illegal is not going to make a difference to drug use. Drugs are accesible with little or no interference. A high school kid can easily score drugs within one hour.

Friedman (Milton) understood the demand for drugs is so high, it is impossible to significantly limit the supply.

Maybe legalizing pot will open the door to other legalizing other drugs. If law-abiding adults want to drug themselves let them do it and let them suffer.

The drug war is the number one expense for law enforcement. So if you want to pay the taxes, and put up with lower police protection of you, your neighbors, and family fine but count me out.

The violence that comes from the drug trade is a result of drugs being illegal. Think about it. Businesses sell their property. They can count on it being protected by the government (police) A gang sells drugs. They cant exactly ask the police to protect their property. Gangs like businesses dont like competition.
Hence violence. Turf protection. Drugs being legal means we regulate the drug trade. We can get it off the black market and into a free market. Im sure you like me are a capitalist. One of the reasons I always have been is that business cant use force against you.

Look at what the drug war has done to black families. (I know the standard answer to this is "tough, they shouldnt have done drugs. Personal Responsibility! and other chest beating phrases) But again if you want to put up with the social problems go for it but count me out.

Josh,

You are correct, in theory. We'll never know for sure until it appens, of course. All the illegal drugs would have to be made legal, even new ones that are created. What I would like to see, if we went the leagl route, is that people would be able to then sue the companies who make the drugs just like they do Tobacco companies. That would be funny.

Its important that you say I am only correct in theory. I totally agree. Thats why I support incremental legalization.

If we were able to sue "drug" companies we could stop them from marketing to kids like these meth peddlers do.
