It was meant to be a place of healing.

But, in recent days, Arizona's 9/11 Memorial has become a political lightning rod.

That was unintentional, says Billy Shields, chairman of the commission that planned the donor-funded monument at Arizona's Capitol Mall.

Shields said the group was aiming to touch people's emotions with the 54 messages etched on the disc-shaped monument. Last week, the memorial became the talk of conservative bloggers on the Internet and caught the eye of Republican gubernatorial candidate Len Munsil. Munsil pledged to replace the memorial if he is elected governor.

Touch the emotions it did....sparking outrage amongst those with sensibilities of what a memorial SHOULD be.

On Friday, Shields said he would recommend reconvening the commission after the Nov. 7 election to re-evaluate what statements should stay or go.

Shields lamented that the memorial - the result of three years of meetings, public hearings, even truck pulls to gin up public interest - has become so politicized. He reflected on the debate with The Republic in an interview.

It became politicised because THEY made it such. These moonbats will NEVER see that though.

Q: What were you trying to accomplish with this memorial? What message, if any, was the commission trying to convey?

A: We've said all along that we want to show the whole gamut of emotions, the whole impact of 9/11. Those things got folded in. That I'll take the responsibility for. And, further, I'll say that I'm sorry to any one that's been hurt by this. I ask your forgiveness for that. That was never the intent.

Somehow I dont believe you Shields, actions speak louder than words, I believed you when I blogged earlier about the hearings, but now seeing the full context of your opinion...I take it back...I will believe it when I see it.

But everything really it spun out of control when it became politicized. And you know I think that offends Americans, and I know it hurts these families members. They're deeply offended that this is being politicized. It should not be politicized.

WHAT OFFENDS AMERICANS MR SHIELDS IS THE REFERENCES TO BLAMING AMERICA FOR THE ATTACKS.......THAT IS WHAT OFFENDS AMERICANS.

Q: You've said that you're interested in reconsidering some passages on the memorial, re-evaluating the messages. What's going to stay on the memorial and what's going to be excluded?

A: I'm one member of a 31-member commission that meets in public. I'd just like to see it all re-examined.

I'm really concerned about some of those statements. Sometimes things go off into conspiracy (theories) for some people. That's just so far off base in this case. If there are some statements that are . . . really hurtful and offensive to folks . . . we ought to re-examine them. If we have to remove them we should.

Oh you WILL Remove them Mr Shields...we will make sure of that.

Q: Len Munsil has said that, if he's elected, he'd demolish the entire memorial and start over from scratch. How does that sit with you, given all the efforts you and the commission put out over the last three or four years?

A: This is what I'm outraged about. This is not a campaign or political party's toy. This is a . . . memorial, a sacred place.

NO SHIT SHERLOCK......SO WHY DID YOU TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO POLITICISE IT AND MAKE IT A BLAME AMERICA MEMORIAL?

Three-thousand people lost their lives and their families. It should not be politicized. It shouldn't even be talked about by candidates and political parties. . . . It should be done in a reverent and solemn setting and in a dignified way to those that died.

THANK GOD Len Munsil spoke out on it, without the pressure that he brought to bear, you would be hiding behind your mothers shirttails with this! Your buddy Napolitano snagged it as a political opportunity, where is your outrage against her?
Q: Were the criticisms that have just come to light in the past week or so simply not out there three years ago, when you were planning?

A: The things that are on (the monument) are all fact-based concerns. I may not like some of them either, but that doesn't change the event. Just because I don't like what happened doesn't mean it didn't occur. . . .

Oh it occured, but it doesnt belong on a memorial...duh

We fought with this internally as a commission. What's going to do a complete and accurate . . . report of those events and issues that surrounded this? Do I have to like that these events occurred? No. But I can't make them go away.

YOUR JOB IN THIS ... MR SHIELDS ... WAS TO MAKE A MEMORIAL .. YOU ARE NOT A JOURNALIST REPORTING THE NEWS, YOU ARE THE HEAD OF A COMMISSION THAT WAS BROUGHT TOGETHER TO MAKE A FITTING TRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS OF 9/11 IN A TASTEFUL WAY THAT ALL OF ARIZONA CAN BE PROUD OF...YOU FAILED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
